This week the UCI announced a late but welcomed addition to the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championship Series, with Spain’s Millars Gran Fondo joining for the first time.
Spain’s only UCI world championship qualifying race will take place just north of Valencia on 10 March in the city of Vila-Real. A very challenging 190 kilometers gran fondo (the longest of any UCI gran fondo) with over 3000 vertical meters of climbing/descending, plus a to-be-announced shorter medio fondo, will provide cyclists with an opportunity to qualify for the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships planned in Aarlborg, Denmark. Riders finishing in the top 25% of their age/gender category will automatically qualify to compete in the world championships.
With routes traversing through the beautiful Sierra de Espadan mountains and support from the Valencian Community Cycling Federation (FCCV) and the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC), Millars Gran Fondo is sure to attract thousands of competitors from across Spain and all of Europe eager to show off early season form – and punch their ticket to the worlds.
