Las Vegas, Nevada USA police have arrested the man accused of killing top BMX racer Nathan Miller. Julius Hopkins, who has 19 previous motor vehicle violations, is accused of reckless driving resulting in death, speeding and having no driver’s license, registration or insurance.
Miller, 32, was out for a ride in his hometown when Hopkins allegedly crashed a Dodge Challenger into him from behind at a high late of speed on 23 September, resulting in Miller’s death hours later at hospital.
Police arrested Hopkins four weeks after the crash, only after a video surfaced appearing to show the Dodge Challenger driving at twice the speed limit and quickly changing lanes before crashing into Miller, killing him.
According to 8 News Now, Hopkins has a lengthy list of 19 driving violations that stretches back to 2010, with many still outstanding and $2000 in unpaid fines. The violations include multiple tickets for no insurance, driver’s license or valid registration. Nevada law recently decriminalized minor traffic offenses, like the 19 traffic tickets, and abolished the practice of issuing court warrants for failure to pay traffic fines or appear in court.
Miller started racing BMX at age four, and over the years won numerous state and national championships. As a 15 year-old in 2006 he earned a bronze medal at the UCI BMX World Championship in São Paulo, Brazil. More recently, he was committed to growing the sport, organizing skill clinics for young riders and helped build the Whitney Mesa BMX track for the city of Henderson.
A fundraiser has been set up to help cover funeral expenses, medical bills, and provide ongoing support for Miller’s family. At press time, over $5800 had been donated.
