20 year-old Dutch road racer Mark Groeneveld (Canadian XSpeed United) died Sunday night, just hours after competing in his final race of the season, the Hong Kong Cyclothon, the team announced.

Due to mechanical issues Groeneveld did not finish the crash filled Hong Kong race that saw 27 riders go down, including 13 in a single pile-up, but while out in public Sunday night he collapsed and could not be revived by emergency medics. The team said local authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death, which is possibly due to sudden cardiac arrest.

“On Monday, October 23rd, XSU and the world lost another great soul. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, team members, and friends,” the team posted on Facebook. “While the circumstances of Mark’s passing are currently under investigation, we have received preliminary information that suggests it may have been due to a heart attack. We are working closely with the relevant authorities to gather all the facts and provide the necessary support to Mark’s family during this painful period.
