On Sunday two cyclists participating in the USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championship / Gran Fondo Maryland amateur race were airlifted to hospital after they were hit by a car.

Maryland State Police (MSP) report at approximately 10:20 they were called to the scene of a car vs. bicycle crash at Foxville Road and Stottlemeyer Road in Frederick County. Arriving on-scene officers found a Honda Civic sedan with uninjured driver, plus two injured male cyclists, ages 34 and 39.

Both cyclists were flown by a MSP helicopter to hospital, with the 34 year-old victim having life-threatening injuries. The second victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The identities of the riders and their current medical condition has not been released.

According to on-scene MSP officers, the cyclists were going north on Stottlemeyer Road and approaching a stop sign at the intersection. The cyclists noticed a MSP vehicle nearby and believed the unit had stopped traffic on Foxville Road for the benefit of event participants. Once the cyclists realized traffic was not stopped, it was too late. They slid past the stop sign into the intersection and the path of the moving Honda, which apparently had the right-of-way.

MSP is continuing to investigate the crash and no arrests have been made.
