UPDATE 14 September 2023: The Huntington Beach Police Department has arrested a male juvenile driver and charged him with one count of Homicide and two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
A cyclist in Huntington Beach, California was killed and two others injured when a rampaging driver appeared to intentionally target and hit all three riders within an hour on Sunday evening.
KABC-7 TV reports the first victim, a male, was struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding his bicycle in a crosswalk at Warner Avenue and Edwards Street and suffered minor injuries.
Thirty minutes later a second male victim was injured when he reported being intentionally sideswiped by a Toyota sedan just a few blocks away from the scene of the first incident.
While police were responding to the first two incidents, less than a mile away a third male victim was found lying near his bicycle in the middle of the road. “Despite the efforts of the paramedics,” the Huntington Beach Police Department (HBPD) said the victim died on scene.
At this time, none of the victims have been identified.
HBPD believes the incidents are “possibly related” and the same driver is likely responsible for intentionally hitting all three cyclists. They are urgently hunting for the driver of a black four-door Toyota sedan with significant front bumper damage. Anyone with information that might help apprehend the suspect should contact HBPD.
”We don’t have any surveillance video at the time. We are asking the public to please check your cameras,” said HBPD Officer Jessica Cuchilla.
In February Dr. Michel John Mammone was intentionally murdered when an automobile driver stabbed and ran him over in nearby Laguna Beach, according to police reports.
Southern California was the most deadly metropolitan area for cyclists in the United States from 2010-2020 according to a study by well known data journalist Henry Hoenig. Los Angeles County saw the most cyclist deaths of any county nationwide, with 276. Orange (112) and Riverside (66) counties to the southeast and San Bernardino (57) county to the northeast all rank among the 15 most deadly counties for cyclists nationwide.
