On Sunday 3 September two participants in the 7th Kufsteinerland Radmarathon in the Bavarian Alps of Austria were injured via separate crashes, with one requiring emergency evacuation by helicopter.
In Brandenberg around 10:00 a 34 year-old male rider entered a curve at a high rate of speed and lost control of his bike, crashing directly into an oncoming car according to police. The rider was transported to hospital with chest injuries, but was later released.
A second more serious accident also occurred when another 34 year-old participant hit a bottle lying in the road and crashed hard to the pavement, sustaining head injuries. Emergency workers arrived at the crash scene quickly and immediately requested air evacuation. The rider was flown to hospital for emergency medical care, but their condition is unknown at press time.
The Bavarian Alps region is well known by cyclists for not only its beautiful views, but also dangerous mountain roads. In 2021 at Highlander Radmarathon participant Ingo Shultz was found dead at the bottom of a steep ravine after sliding out on a steep hairpin turn and tumbling over a stone wall.
Over 850 riders participated in Kufsteinerland Radmarathon, with 31 year-old Kuen Maximilian winning the 120 kilometer long race with 1800 meters of climbing in 3:07:30.
