UPDATE 18 August 2023: Over 24 hours 273 readers participated in our “Should pros be allowed to compete in the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship?” survey. Results are in and almost 57% voted to keep former pro cyclists out. Full survey results below.
After publishing several recent articles about ex-pro cyclists racing in the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships (some winning gold, some claiming multiple world titles and others placing Top 10), we have been inundated with emails from readers – most expressing outrage that pro riders, especially those with a history of doping, would step down to amateur racing to try and win a world championship title and rainbow jersey.
Current UCI rules allow pro/elite riders to compete in the Gran Fondo World Championships EXCEPT under the following conditions: 1) Any rider who has during the current year been a member of a team registered with the UCI. 2) Any rider who has taken part in World Championships, Olympic Games, Continental Games, Regional Games, Commonwealth Games, or World Cup during current year. 3) Any rider who has scored UCI points in the year of the World Championships.
