UPDATE: Burchi received a 3 year ban by NADO Italia, ending 8 August 2026.

51 year-old Felice Burchi is the tenth Italian amateur cyclist in 2023 to return a positive anti-doping test for Erythropoietin (EPO), according to a statement issued by the National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO Italia).

Burchi, racing for TWENTYTWO FACTORY RACING, started the season on 13 March finishing ninth in his age category at Granfondo Rerum Novarum, but twenty-six minutes behind the winner. Six weeks later on 27 April he won Gran Premio Bandelloni – solo.

EPO is a drug banned at all times by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Its use by amateur cyclists is on the rise since it is easy to obtain and dramatically improves performance by increasing red blood cell production, which then carries significantly more oxygen to the body’s muscles.

Until a NADO hearing is held and a final verdict is issued, Burchi is suspended from participating in cycling events in any capacity. If found guilty of an EPO anti-doping violation, Burchi is facing a 4-year suspension, but may receive a 1-year reduction if he does not challenge the charges and accepts NADO’s findings.
