The Southern California cycling community is mourning the loss of well-known bike racer and Don’s Cycling Team leader William Elliott, 55, who was killed in a head-on traffic collision on 29 July while on a group ride.
At 09:35 officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and paramedics responded to a car vs bike crash at Mills Creek Road and Highway 38 in Mentone. Police reports indicate Elliott, a resident of nearby Redlands, was hit head-on and killed by the driver of a Chevy SUV that crossed into Elliott’s path while he was waiting in a dedicated left-turn lane, launching him into the group of cyclists. Elliott’s injuries were grave and fellow cyclists immediately started life saving care. When paramedics arrived they transported Elliott to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased at 10:21.
Just a few weeks ago Elliott placed 11th at the State Criterium Championships from a talented field of 86 competitors aged 55+ years-old. Afterwards he posted on Instagram, “CBR/SCNCA Masters 55+ State Championship – 11th place for 55+. Largest field I’ve raced against with 86 riders and fast. With state title online wouldn’t expect anything less. Thanks to @not_so_fat_adventurer and @ayozol_oigres for race support and as I’ve mentioned before I have much still to work on. This was the epitome of ‘racing in a phone booth; with riders all around at high speeds. We’ll… many don’t remember what a phone booth is so can’t use that”
A fundraising site has been setup for those wishing to help memorialize Elliott, funds received will donated to Kids For Bikes and Gran Teton National Park.
