UPDATE: Mallus received a 4 year ban by NADO Italia, ending 17 July 2027.
53 year-old Falvio Mallus is caught up in a second doping scandal according to NADO Italia (National Anti-Doping Organization). The amateur road racer is accused of evading an anti-doping test after winning the 2023 Sardinia Hillclimbing Championship on Monte Ortone on 9 July.
The Ajo Cycling Team rider is charged with a World Anti-Doping Agency Article 2.3 violation: “Refusing, or failing without compelling justification, to submit to sample collection after notification as authorized in applicable anti-doping rules or otherwise evading sample collection.”
This is not the first time Mallus has been accused of doping. In 2011 he was charged and found guilty of also violating Article 2.3, but not as a result of his significant fault or negligence. Thus, he received a short one year ban and fined €1220.
Until a NADO hearing is held for Mallus and a final verdict issued, he is suspended from participating in WADA governed sports in any capacity.
