USA Cycling announced 17 year-old Magnus White, who was scheduled to leave early this week for the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland, was killed Saturday when he was struck with a car while on a final training ride near his home in Boulder, Colorado.
“He was a rising star in the off-road cycling scene and his passion for cycling was evident through his racing and camaraderie with his teammates and local community,” USA Cycling said in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to the White family, his teammates, friends, and the Boulder community during this incredibly difficult time,”
White, a 2021 USA National Cyclocross champion, was a member of the U.S. Junior National cyclocross/mountain bike team and also started competing in road events, including the Tour of America’s Dairyland. He was entered in the 2023 Men’s Junior Cross-country MTB world championship race taking place 10 August in Scotland.
Considered a rising American star, White started racing at age 10 and grew up around bikes in a competitive cycling family. “When I was growing up, my dad really got me into cycling because he raced road, then I discovered my local team (Boulder Junior Cycling), which has some really great coaches who got me where I am today,” White posted on the USA Cycling website.
Colorado State police believe a 23 year-old female drove her car onto the road shoulder and crashed into White from behind. At this time, alcohol/drugs and excessive speed are not suspected, but distracted driving has not been ruled out. No arrests have been made and police continue to investigate the incident.
