Alan Carrillo Ávila and María Montserrat Camargo Santacana won the first edition of L´Etape Cancún by Tour de France, which took place 25 June with more than 1500 cyclists, from 28 countries, competing on the roads around Cozumel, Mexico.

Multisport athlete Alán Carrillo, who only finished 64th at the GFNY World Championships in May, soloed to victory in the 110km gran fondo race with a time of 2:28:57, leaving behind Manuel Serrano Plowells (2:31:20) and Jaime Vergara Caro (2:31:21), who finished in second and third place.

Coming off recent strong performances at the Joe Martin Stage Race and Tour of the Gila in the USA, María Camargo won, via a sprint, the women’s gran fondo in 2:31:24, surpassing Viridiana Olmos Lases (2:31:26) in a final dash to the finish. Bianca Brenda Iñigo Gámez (2:32:38) came in third.

In the shorter 60km medio fondo, Héctor Morales Domínguez with a time of 1:24:54 took first place, followed Montserrat Pérez Vera as the women’s champion in 1:24:58.

Part of the worldwide L’Etape by Tour de France amateur gran fondo series, the event attracted athletes from Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, the United States, some European countries and, of course, from all across Mexico.
