With a record setting 550 individual time trial competitors, the Tour of Cambridgeshire Gran Fondo got underway on Friday. After rolling down the start house ramp, the United Kingdom’s largest amateur time trial covered 16.4 miles on closed roads with 500 feet of elevation gain. Competitors finishing in the top 25% of their age/gender category automatically qualified to race in the upcoming 2023 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships taking place in Scotland.
20 year-old Will Lowden (Huub Wattshop) set a blistering fast time of 33:04 that could not be beat. Simon Wilson, a teammate of Lowden, was second in 33:16, followed by Alex Doherty at 33:52. Last year’s winner George Fox was far off the pace, finishing over a minute behind Lowden.
Will Lowden is the cousin of Uno-X pro Joscelin Lowden and was one of five amateur cyclists fighting for a pro contract with Alpecin-Deceuninck in the Zwift Academy finals this past winter, but unfortunately he had to withdraw after testing positive for Covid.
Kate Allan (Team Bottrill) won the women’s competition with a time of 36:36 and finished 46th overall. Jennifer George at 37:48 and 2022 UCI Gran Fondo Time Trial World Champion Jennifer Rhodes-Jones at 38:27 were the next fastest women.
