Talented young Irish road cyclist Gabriele Glodenyte was killed Saturday in a collision while on a ride north of Dublin.

The 24 year-old Glodenyte was fatally injured and died on-scene when the collision occurred with an oncoming automobile. Upon arrival, police interviewed the auto driver and started forensic collision analysis, but did not make an arrest.

Her partner Sean Landers, a former national champion, made the heartbreaking announcement online: “I can’t believe I have to make this post, but I want to let everybody know that unfortunately Gabriele’s life was taken from us all too soon, doing what she loved. On Saturday afternoon, on our cycle together, she was struck head on by a car, and killed. Thank you to everyone for the kind messages I’ve received. RIP Gabriele.”

Glodenyte only started road cycling a few years ago while studying at University College Dublin, but progressed at a meteoric rate to win the Cycling Ireland National Road Series last year, the country’s premier competition for road cyclists.

Cycling Ireland issued the following statement: “On behalf of all of our members, Cycling Ireland would like to extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, clubmates and all who knew her. Our thoughts are with them at this devastating time.”
