A record 25,000 cyclists participated in the 10th edition of RideLondon in Great Britain on Sunday, with one succumbing to heat exhaustion, passing out and waking up alone in a ditch alongside the 100 mile route.

Ediz Mevlit thinks he passed out near the halfway point, but does not remember the incident. On Twitter he posted: “Unfortunately I passed out for some reason and ended up in a ditch where my shoulder popped in and out. I’m not being allowed to continue and on route to hospital.”

Although the high temperature on Sunday was only 72F, it was about 10F more than is typical for this time of year. Combined with high humidity, it created perfect conditions for cyclists to experience dangerous heat exhaustion during the event.

On 60 and 100 mile routes, the world’s largest gran fondo cycling event took place on over 50 completely closed roads. Both routes departed from central London and rode through Essex towns, villages and countryside before finishing on Tower Bridge back in the capital city.
