A 25 year-old mountain bike racer died 12 April after he was critically injured during an amateur race outside of Ashland, Oregon USA, the local Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) reported.
Forrest Anthony Angwin was participating in the sanctioned Devo Downhill Spring Series 2023 – Race #2, organized by Ashland Devo, on Wednesday evening when he crashed and became unresponsive, according to a sheriff’s office press release.
Deputies, Ashland Fire & Rescue and JCSO Search and Rescue were immediately called, but despite Angwin wearing a helmet, safety gear and life-saving efforts from first responders, he was not revived and died at the scene around 18:30.
As a downhill MTB competitor, Angwin was familiar with the dangers of high speed riding on rugged singletrack through dense forest terrain. In April 2022 he posted an Instagram picture of his helmet with a severe crash dent, saying “Ya so think it’s time for a new helmet…didn’t get knocked out but still super sore.”
