Monterey’s Laguna Seca Raceway has witnessed its share of drama over the decades – roaring engines, screaming tyres, and the sort of motorsport heroics that make grown adults weep. On Saturday 18 April, however, something altogether more dignified descends upon the famous California circuit. Something very, very British.

The Brompton Folding-Bike World Championship is coming to the Sea Otter Classic, and frankly, the state of California may never quite recover.

For the first time since 2018, the one-of-a-kind showdown returns to American soil , bringing with it that uniquely British cocktail of fierce cycling competition and barely-contained absurdity.

Competitors are encouraged to turn up dressed in tweed jackets, ties, and skirts – because nothing says “I am a serious athlete” quite like racing a tiny foldable bicycle whilst dressed for a board meeting in Mayfair.

The action begins with the signature Le Mans start – riders sprint to their folded British built Bromptons, fumble heroically with the hinges, mount up, and charge off for three laps of the world famous 2.2-mile Laguna Seca circuit, including a solid 180-foot climb each lap. Those opening seconds, a glorious tangle of flapping jacket lapels and dropped handlebars, are arguably the finest spectacle in modern sport.

World Championship titles go to Fastest Male, Fastest Female, and Best Dressed – that last category being no afterthought.

The Sea Otter Classic attracts over fifty-thousand spectators and thousands of MTB, gravel and gran fondo cyclists, most of whom will have seen nothing quite like this. In fact, the Brompton “unfolded” lifestyle – simple commuting, urban exploration, eco-friendly and space saving – just might take root. Consider it a cultural exchange – California gets tweed, Britain gets to plant the seed.

Everyone wins.

Registration closes 11 April. Pack your best jacket.
