Up-and-coming junior Spanish cyclist Estela Dominguez was run over and killed by a truck driver late on Thursday while on a training ride in Salamanca in northwestern Spain.

Police and emergency services rushed to the scene of the tragedy, but were unable to save her. According to police, the truck driver indicated he was blinded by the setting sun and did not notice Dominguez at one of the intersections.

The 19-year-old daughter of ex-pro Juan Carlos Domínguez was set to make her first pro start this spring after signing a contract to ride for Sopela Women’s Team, a UCI professional road team that aims to compete at the biggest races, including the Tour de France Femmes.

In January she took part in the World Cup Cyclocross race in Benidorm and finished fifth in the Spanish Junior Women’s National Road Race last year.

Legendary Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde was one of many who posted a sincere tribute to the youngster on social media.
