The new year just started in the worst possible way for current Spanish National Amateur Road Champion Inigo Gonzalez after anti doping agency AEPSAD announced the 23 year-old tested positive for Erythropoietin (EPO) and Tramadol.
The anti doping check was carried out in July after finishing third in the Loinatz Prueba de Beasain amateur race in the Basque Country, where Gonzalez (Club Ciclista Padrones Cortizo) finished third. Just a week earlier he won the Spanish National Amateur Road Champion title in Mallorca with a super strong performance that saw most of his competitors abandon.
The Basque rider is without a team for 2023 and is now unlikely to find one since he is potentially facing a four-year competitive ban if found guilty of EPO use. Tramadol is currently not a banned performance enhancing substance, but in-race use results in disqualification. In 2024 Tramadol will become a banned substance at all times by the World Anti Doping Agency.
