PARIS, FRANCE 01 April 2021
Following the UCI’s new strategy of promoting “Cycling For All,” Tour de France organiser ASO announced today the 2021 Tour de France will combine with their popular L’Etape de Tour amateur cyclosportive in a brand new event – Tour de L’Etape.
Taking place in July in place of the Tour de France, the new mass-start event will allow amateur cyclists from all across the world to live out their fantasy of riding alongside their favorite Tour de France riders.
With 5000 starting bibs available for each of 21 stages, over 100,000 amateur cyclists will pay 100 euros to rub elbows and wheels with cycling legends, while ASO reaps a huge financial windfall.
Announcing the new format spokesperson Henri Carbonneau said, “We are glad to support the UCI’s new program and look forward to welcoming amateur weekend cyclists to Le Tour. With the roads already closed for Pro riders it only makes sense to add 5000 amateurs. Just imagine how our TV ratings will soar as family and friends stay glued to the TV looking to see if their loved one takes out Egan Bernal or Peter Sagan in a crash.”
