Before the start of the 10th Ciclotour Mazatlán on 5 December, Mexican National Road Champion Maria Antonieta Gaxiola Gonzalez and two-thousand passionate cyclists from all across Mexico paused for a heartfelt moment of silence to honor those lost to COVID, including local cycling legend and 1964 Olympian Enrique “Kiki” Vázquez who passed away the previous day at age 78.

Afterwards, still wearing facemasks the peloton rolled out from the port of Mazatlán to begin 70 and 140 kilometre medio and gran fondo routes.

At year’s end after a long pandemic plagued cycling season riders were happy to roll around, soak up sun and enjoy beautiful views along the Sea of Cortez.  Leading by example, National Champion Maria Antonieta Gaxiola Gonzalez was in no hurry, finishing in 6:14:00 on the 140km route.
