Greg Lemond, a 3x World Road Champion, 3x Tour de France Champion and the only American to win the Tour de France, was awarded the United States Congressional Gold Medal on Friday 4 December after President Trump signed the Greg Lemond Congressional Gold Medal Act into law.

It was another first for the American rider who took the European cycling world by storm in the 1980s, not only by winning major races, but also bring key innovation to the pro peloton by introducing aero handlebars, sport glasses and big pay increases for domestique riders.

The Greg LeMond Congressional Gold Medal Act passed in the USA House of Representatives in June 2019 and last week in the USA Senate.

The bill lists Lemond’s accomplishments as an American hero: the youngest American Olympic cyclist, first American to win a pro race in Europe, first and only American to win the Tour de France, and a leading advocate of the “Race Clean” anti-doping movement.
