The 2020 Gran Fondo Alberto Contador is suspended due to a resurgence of coronavirus cases in the Valencia region of Spain.
“With deep regret, we need to cancel the 10th edition of the Alberto Contador Gran Fondo,” the organizer announced Friday on social media.
The 10th edition of La Gran Fondo Alberto Contador, scheduled for 26 September in the town of Oliva, fell victim to a rapid increase in the number of coronavirus cases and hospital admissions in the region, making it impossible to hold the event.
Over 1000 riders already registered for the 10th edition which offered 162km gran fondo and 111km medio fondo routes crossing the regions of Valencia and Alicante on the Mediterranean coast.
Hosted by seven time Grand Tour winner Alberto Contador, the event hoped to have 4000 registered riders, which would be double last year’s attendance.
Gran Fondo Alberto Contador plans to return in September 2021.
