This comes as police worldwide start to crackdown on anyone who breaks emergency social distancing orders issued by governments to battle the spread of COVID-19.

The mayor, Jaliya Opatha, was arrested by local police for organising and participating in the bicycle race on Thursday. Another person was also taken into custody, Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana said in a press statement.
