The Mayor of Dambulla, Sri Lanka was arrested Friday for participating and organizing an amateur gran fondo cycling race, despite a government ban on pubic events and large gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This comes as police worldwide start to crackdown on anyone who breaks emergency social distancing orders issued by governments to battle the spread of COVID-19.
The mayor, Jaliya Opatha, was arrested by local police for organising and participating in the bicycle race on Thursday. Another person was also taken into custody, Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana said in a press statement.
Both were arraigned and released on bail.
