The 45th annual Assault on Mt. Mitchell scheduled for Monday, May 18, 2020 is sold out.

800 lucky cyclists from across the world will leave Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA and ride 102 miles to the summit of the highest peak in the Eastern USA – 6684′ Mt. Mitchell.  It is one of the most demanding gran fondo style events in North America, attracting cyclists from across the globe who want to cross it off their bucket list.

The Assault on Mt. Mitchell began in 1975 when John Bryan decided to climb the 6684′ peak on a bicycle – starting from Spartanburg, South Carolina 102 miles away.  Unfortunately, it was in the Fall and darkness arrived before he made the summit.

Undeterred, he returned the following year with six friends to try again.  One of them coined the term “The Assault on Mt. Mitchell.”  It stuck and is now known worldwide by cyclists making the annual pilgrimage to Spartanburg.
