Great Britain has a new gran fondo cycling club, GB Granfondo Racing Club, exclusively for elite top British gran fondo riders – the kind who want to bring a World Championship rainbow jersey back home.
According to their website, GB Granfondo Racing Club is by invitation only for riders who have previously qualified for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. Led by double Olympic cycling medalist Bryan Steel, the club will use a “pro team of super domestiques and mechanics” to support riders at gran fondo races.
That’s right, Director Sportif Steel has hired gran fondo super domestiques – ex Pros like New Zealand National Time Trial Champion Taylor Gunman – to set pace, chase down breaks, keep riders out of the wind and offer strategic advice.
The team’s 2020 schedule includes UCI Cyprus Gran Fondo, Etape du Tour Nice, La Marmotte Alps and Italy’s Strade Bianche, with the goal of qualifying and preparing riders for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Vancouver, Canada.
Membership dues for the calendar year are £199 and come with team bibs, jersey and nifty race bag with your name on it – just like a Pro.
