On Saturday pro cyclist Bauke Mollema soloed over roads covered with Fall leaves to win the 113th edition of Il Lombardia, the monumental end-of-season race in Lombardy, Italy. On Sunday 2500 amateur racers from 5 continents and 41 countries to tried to the same at Gran Fondo Il Lombardia.
The 112km route with numerous ups and downs, including the mythical climb to Madonna del Ghisallo above Lake Como and the Muro di Sormano with its 27% grade, gradually weeded out competitors before they returned to the start/finish in Cantù.
The first man to cross the finish line at 3:00:21 in Cantù was Italian Davide Busuito (TEAM DE ROSA SANTINI), the reigning European Gran Fondo Champion. Finishing second was Daniele Terzi (A.S.D. STEMAX TEAM) and Pietro Dutto (SC VIGOR CYCLING TEAM) third.
Reigning UCI Gran Fondo World Champion Luca Fioretti finished fourth and called it “A really tough race.”
German Astrid Schartmueller (ALPILATTE B.R.PNEU.ZANE) was the first women, finishing in 3:31:08. Sonia Passuiti (SOMEC MG K VIS LGL) was second and teammate Gioia Chiodi third.
