While Nikias Arndt (Sunweb) sprinted to victory, Spanish dopers sprinted away from police on the 8th stage of Vuelta Espana after a helicopter TV crew alerted police to a rooftop marijuana operation.
Police quickly raided the building in Lleida, Catalonia and confiscated 40 marijuana plants, which viewers could clearly see from the sky-high live TV broadcast at the end of the stage.
Police told ESPN, “We received information thanks to the images that individuals posted on social media that had been taken from the helicopter of La Vuelta,” the spokesperson said. “That has helped us to seize 40 marijuana plants. No one has been arrested, but the investigation is still ongoing to find those responsible.”
Growing marijuana in Spain remains illegal despite consumption of the drug being decriminalized.
Although no arrests have been made yet, police posted the revealing aerial photos on social media as a warning to would-be rooftop dopers.
