After seven years of rapid growth and success, Canada’s Gibsons Grind Gran Fondo outside Vancouver has been cancelled due to rider safety concerns. Citing an increase in car traffic and “a deterioration in Sunshine Coast Highway”, the promoters decided to cancel the popular for 2019.
The event was one of the fastest growing and in-demand gran fondo’s in Canada, usually selling out every year. For 2018, entries were capped at 350 riders and sold out in only two and a half hours, with hundreds of people adding their names to a wait list.
The ride’s proximity to Vancouver, coastal scenery and route difficulty attracted riders from across the Pacific Northwest, and beyond. At 110km, the route rolled up and down the coastline over many, many hills, challenging riders with 1700m of total climbing.
Currently, there are no plans to bring the event back.
