This week’s European featured event is tucked smartly between the popular Tuscany and Umbria regions, and the deep blue  Adriatic Sea in Italy’s rural Marche region.  It is a hidden gem containing Astana pro rider Michele Scarponi’s home town – Filottrano.

Scarponi died tragically in a car accident two years while out on a training ride just around the corner from his home.   Known as one of the friendliest and most likable riders in the pro peloton, loved by fans and competitors alike, the sport lost a great champion and a special guy, who always wore a fun-loving smile in every situation.

To celebrate his passion for life, family, cycling and the Marche region, the 2nd Gran Fondo Scarponi took place last Sunday in Filottrano.  Thousands of smiling riders came together to keep Michele’s jovial spirit alive and showcase the joy of gran fondo cycling.  Watch riders in the video below rolling over Michele’s favorite training roads on a beautiful Italian spring day, then think about adding Gran Fondo Scarponi to your bucket list.  It is something very special you will never forget – just like Michele Scarponi.
