Haute Route, best known for epic week long gran fondo events in Europe, has cancelled a second week long event for 2019, the Colorado, USA based Haute Route Rockies.
Launched in 2017 with almost 400 riders from across the globe Haute Route Rockies was poised for huge success, but a year later rider numbers were almost cut in half, with just over 200 riders signing up. Now, with a combination of slow pre-registrations, difficult logistics, high operating costs and unenthusiastic host cities, Haute Route pulled the plug for 2019. It’s a big loss for the North American Gran Fondo movement, but just goes to show not every premium European product sells well in the USA.

Also, with the week-long Haute Route Dolomites already cancelled for 2019, hardcore gran fondo riders now have only two Haute Route week-long events to consider – Haute Route Alps and Haute Route Pyrenees.
If a week-long gran fondo race is on your bucket list better do it soon, they are an endangered species.
